RSVPHOW WE MET (Teejay)
So one month into my stay in America, we (my family) heard a father and her two daughters (one of them happened to be Tolu) talking in Yoruba in front of an African store. We got excited because we finally found people that we will able to relate with. We approached them, introduced ourselves and they were kind enough to invite us over to their house. Since that day both families became family friends and visited each other a lot. As a result, I was friend-zoned for a long time, even becoming her relationship counselor during other relationships. But as a sharp man, I waited patiently for the other guys to mess up and made my move at the right time. The rest, well you can read that when I publish my book
WHO MADE THE FIRST MOVE (By Tolu)
Since TeeJay and I were around the same age, we quickly became good friends after our families met. TJ became my personal adviser and would often counsel me about literally everything, but mostly about guys.. During one of our talks, I asked him if he liked anyone and he told me that he had a crush on someone and that His first (and only) girlfriend would become his wife, I laughed it off. Four years into the friendship in 2008, we attended the same University. During one of our relationship talks, I told him I was done with guys and was no longer getting into relationships. His response was "Let me know when you're ready to start dating again"... Shortly after this, he called me to the cafeteria and confessed that he's had a crush on me since we met. At first, I thought it was so awkward that someone that I considered to be almost like family actually had those kinds of feelings towards me. I didn't give him any response then and later came up with an excuse that my dad or my sister said I couldn't date him or something random like that Lol. After weeks of completely avoiding him, I slowly started wrapping my head around the idea of maybe, just maybe I could give him a chance. In February of 2008, the love story began...
THE FAKE PROPOSAL(S)
I can't count the number of times Teejay asked if I will marry him with my response always being 'why aren't you down on one knee' cuz I knew he was just joking. There was actually a time while we were on a short vacation to Virginia Beach with my sister and a few close friends when he playfully got down on one knee, (everyone knew how playful TeeJay could be so they all played along). Knowing he was no longer afraid to get on his knee, my response changed to 'where is the ring' and so next time he asked if I will marry him, he offered an onion ring haha. I was never bothered at all by all those "fake proposals" because I knew for sure that one day he would have to do it for real and so I just left him alone to practice...
ANOTHER FAKE PROPOSAL?
February 2016, the week before Super Bowl, TeeJay had asked if I could come home to Rhode Island from school and watch Superbowl with him and some of our friends. I got home that weekend and went to my home church (RCCG that we both attend). After church ended, I went outside and as I was about to jump into my car and head out, I spotted my friend Dele Oyedepo (a photographer) taking pictures with his professional camera. I quickly ran over to get my picture taken (Yes, I love taking pictures, besides, I needed a new profile pic:)! After a few solo shots, I saw TJ come towards where we were having our little photo shoot and signaled for him to come get in the picture with me. After the first 3-5 shots, TeeJay asked if I wanted to try a different pose - He wanted to pose as if he was proposing to me, in Public!!! I immediately tried to stop him and literally pulled him up as he was about going on one knee (Pic on Right)
I SCREAMED YES!!!
In my mind I was trying to stop him from another fake practice proposing to me because people around us would think he was proposing for real, I didn't want any unnecessary attention. Besides, there was snow on ground, I didn't want him to get his nice outfit ruined by another one of his "fake practice proposals", or so I thought... until I saw him go down on his knee again, this time, he pulled out a box from his jacket, opened it and asked if I would be his wife... I guess he tried to say everything he had rehearsed but I was just laughing and screaming. I was laughing because this whole time that I thought everyone was randomly taking photos, they were all acting and it was all planned. I was screaming in excitement that my teenage lover was asking if I would spend the rest of my life with him - I screamed Yesss!!!
TeeJay indeed stayed true to his statement from 12 years ago that his first and only girlfriend would become his wife <3
